GRAIN AND SPARKLES
There's nothing like analog grain and Riso printing colours.
I attended a class by Kelli Anderson a few months ago in where she taught Riso animation. It was so much fun and so cool to see her process of Riso printing and then animating it!

I had printed in Riso previously for my book Wonder's kickstarter about 5 years ago. But I had never animated anything with it. It was quite eye-opening!
Before the class, we needed to bring our own animations to work on. And I wanted to share a bit of that.
I'm not an animator (as you can probably notice by this choppy animation lol) but it was still so much fun to explore and keep it as light as possible.

So I started with a sketch in Procreate:
I could have cleaned it, but I kept this lifework throughout the animation. I wanted it to be lose and, again, not put a lot of pressure on myself.
I've never really animated before, just a few explorations here and there. So I decided to go by steps. First, the sparkler and eyes:
Then the hair! Which was kind of harder lol.
Also, animating in Procreate is cool, but I found it not ideal. It's good until it becomes a huge file.
But Photoshop is no better lol. Can't wait for Procreate Dreams.
This time, I used Photoshop later on for the painting process, though.

I did 30 frames for this, which I had to print after in Riso at the class with Kelli.
For the actual painting, as I said, I used Photoshop.
Mainly because the layer structure looked like this: (lol)
And my iPad couldn't have taken that kind of volume.
I am sure there's better ways/programs to do this, but it was cool to see that I could achieve something kind of ok with the programs I use in my everyday routine.
Ready for the final painted photoshop version?
This is basically what I brought into the animation class, and then we printed it in Riso and made the sequence.
The riso printing looks AWESOME. I'm not sure if it came across as fluorescent and nice in the pic here, but it's so JUICY.
So all the texture, grain and texture is thanks to the print.
I'm so amazed by this whole process and I really want to try again. Hopefully soon?
Anyway, this is the final Riso animation again!:
